Deadline: 22nd January 2017
Description of the receiving organization:
Crooked House was established in 1993. We work mainly in the areas of theatre, education, youth work and community development. We provide a forum in which young people can develop the skills necessary to be active and creative citizens. We do this by integrating youth work values into arts-based programmes (with a focus on theatre and performance).
We organise and run:
• drama-based personal development workshops,
• film making workshops that explore youth issues
• music lessons, jam sessions, and Open Mic Nights
• dance workshops – street dance, hip-hop, and shuffle dance – particularly for non-Irish-national young people
• leadership training for those aged 14-25.
We promote positive mental health initiatives. We work with marginalized young people and early school-leavers. We integrate young people with special needs into mainstream workshops. We bring young people from all of the socio-economic classes and backgrounds together in one place. Our work is mostly voluntary and we do not have any core, paid staff. We have a trained panel of facilitators who work with a wide variety of organisations.
Since its inception Crooked House has worked with youth groups throughout Kildare, Ireland and abroad, on themes of social justice, equality, human rights, and community development. These themes are expressed through workshops, devised pieces and plays. The majority of this work aims to promote positive mental health; increase citizenship abilities; promote equality and develop critical thinking.
Crooked House runs Kildare Youth Theatre. We host 4 volunteers per year. Volunteers should have experience in theatre facilitation or directing theatre. This is so that we can share our practice with you, and that you can share yours with us. Ideally, you will come from a youth theatre in your country, or you will be studying acting or theatre. Perhaps you may have left college and are looking to experience how theatre is made with young people in different countries?
Volunteers typically help deliver drama workshops and help direct performances with young people. This is not with children, but with young adults (aged 15 to 20). Some volunteers who have sufficient skills can hold workshops of their own with the young people (they are supervised for support). Others may create new pieces of theatre in collaboration with the young people. This work is in the afternoons and evenings, and at week ends. This is because our young people are in school during the day.
Volunteers should have experience in drama, or acting. Ideally, they will come from a youth theatre, or acting course. If they do not have this experience, they should have studied theatre or drama. Or they should have directed plays for the stage.
The most ideal volunteer is one who has this experience, and who would like to try out new form of theatre with young people. perhaps they’d like to experiment with theatre, or learn new facilitation skills.
They should be outgoing, very able to work independently, be curious, and be respectful of young people and their opinions.
How to apply:
Please email a CV that details your experience in drama, or theatre, or directing, or acting. Include also any experience you have working with young people who are aged over 15 years.
Please also email a letter that talks about some ideas in theatre you’d like to try.
Please send your application to e-mail address: firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com
Accommodation is always with a host family in the town of Newbridge. You will have your own room and use of the kitchen/bathroom and other common areas of the house whenever you wish. Some of the families have teenagers who are in (or have been in) our youth theatre.
Some houses, though comfortable and safe, are about 2 to 3 km from the centre of the town where we are based. Therefore we have bicycles which you can use for the year.
We pay €300 to the family for rent per month and the rest is given to you (plus your allowance) for food and supplies monthly.
Please make sure to visit our website at www.kildareyouththeatre.com to find out about us.
If you are unsure whether or not you are the kind of person we are looking for, please send us an email and we will chat about it. It is more important that we are the kind of organisation you are looking for!
